Third molar (wisdom tooth) Impaction

It is a condition in which the third molars are unable to erupt in the oral cavity in its normal functional position due to some physical barrier (tooth/ bone above it) or when tooth is angled in an unfavorable position or due to lack of space.

Third molar (wisdom tooth) are the last tooth to erupt in the oral cavity by around the age of 17 to 21 years.

Why should you get it extracted?

Dentist and oral surgeon recommend the removal of impacted wisdom tooth (third molar) when they are causing pain, discomfort or infection.

These impacted third molar may also cause damage to the adjacent tooth. However, some dentist may also recommend removal of impacted third molar with no current associated problems to prevent future problems.

The dentist or the oral surgeon recommends you to get an X- ray or OPG or CBCT done to determine and examine the impacted third molar.


Surgical extraction is performed by a dentist or an oral surgeon.

Prior to the surgical procedure the dentist prescribes you some medications which includes

  • Antacid
  • Antibiotic
  • Analgesics (painkillers)

The difficulty index of the surgical extraction depends on the position of the tooth, direction in which it is lying, its relation to bone and its relation to bone and its relation to the surrounding anatomic structure.

Once the tooth is removed suturing is done in the site of extraction. Post extraction instructions are also given to the patient, that the patient must follow religiously to prevent post- extraction complications.
